New Support Group Now Established in NW

Hi folks,

I've helped launch a new support group at the clinic where I currently work. We formed this group in response to ongoing customer demand. Our hope is that it feels more comfortable, and meets the needs of its members more effectively than our general-purpose Eating Disorder support group can.

What: Compulsive Eating support group (our "working" title- we're open to suggestions!)

Who: For adults 18 & over who feel they're struggling due to being of a heavy weight/large size, whether it's because of body image, feelings of isolation, medical issues caused by or complicated by weight, or experiencing symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder.

When: 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the month, from 6:30-7:30pm

Where: Group Room, A Better Way Counseling Center, 818 NW 17th Ave., Portland, Oregon 97209

Why: To provide a "safe" space for people to openly discuss their thoughts, feelings, behaviors and reactions about these topics, share valuable information, and learn about ways that others cope successfully with their struggles.

How:  A drop-in group, with discussion moderated by A Better Way therapist trained in working with Eating Disorders & related issues. May sometimes include activities (Art expression, interactive group exercises, topic discussion, etc.) depending on the interests of the group. People are encouraged to come to at least a few group sessions in a row, to get the most out of the experience, as well as to help in creating a group "culture" that can truly address the unique needs of its members.

Cost: Free to attend. No "sales pitch" involved, but we're happy to provide referrals to additional help or resources-whether at our clinic, or elsewhere- upon request.
